Person Centred Planning proved effective in ensuring that each person with disabilities receives the support he or she needs. Nevertheless, a 2011 study revealed that in most countries well-developed training on person centred approaches is still missing. In the same year, the project New Paths to Inclusion addressed this gap by creating a pilot training. The curriculum was successfully used in trainings in Austria, Germany and in the Czech Republic.

To create a common foundation for all members of the New Paths to InclUsion Network, we have used the curriculum to organise training courses on person centred approaches in Croatia, Slovakia, Spain, Portugal and Romania. The trainings took place in each country between October 2013 and April 2014. They consisted of five two-day modules which allowed service-providers and persons with disabilities to learn about the methodology of person centred planning and its different tools.

To prepare the training, in May 2013 members of our network met for a workshop in Prague. They discussed important elements of the training and clarified their specific roles as trainers and facilitators. You can find the photo-minutes from the preparatory workshops here.

As one of our objectives is to create an inclusive training where persons with and without disabilities can participate and learn together, we asked the participants of the training courses to fill in a questionnaire and evaluate their inclusiveness. The input from the participants, trainers and course facilitators was collected by INNOVIA and will be used to developed guidelines on how to conduct inclusive training.  At the end of the project, these guidelines will result in a handbook containing good practice examples on ‘inclusive trainings’.
