A wide array of meetings and workshops have taken place in Germany over the past few months focusing on the role of person-centred planning for people with disabilities, which would facilitate people with disabilities in living a self-determined life.

The annual North German Network Meeting took place in September, bringing together individuals and organisations to discuss person-centred planning and the next steps that need to be taken in the path towards an inclusive life.

Network member organization Leben mit Behinderung Hamburg has played an active role in contributing to the discussion. In a workshop organised in February, people with disabilities, employees and family members were invited to develop communication skills allowing for greater cooperation and understanding of person-centred planning.

The organization was able to draw many informed conclusions and outcomes as a direct result of the workshop. Leben mit Behinderung Hamburg has acknowledged the need for the development of a ‘Guideline for Person-Centred Thinking,’ which would allow all stakeholders, from people with disabilities to their employers, to develop a universal understanding of the benefits of person-centred thinking. Acknowledging the importance of producing accessible information, Leben mit Behinderung Hamburg also intends to disseminate information related to future events in easy-to-read format.

With the participation of as many as 21 organisations, most of which are from Northern Germany, the organization is also currently hosting a 12-month long training period designed to oversee the correct implementation of person-centred planning and thinking to support people with disabilities in their everyday lives.
