Quip, a New Paths to InclUsion Network partner from the Czech Republic, has created two short animation movies on the use of person-centred tools and child participation. Based on a true story, the two movies are about Marek, a young boy with intellectual disabilities who had been living in an institution his entire life.

In the first movie, Marek, supported by people who care about him and love him, realizes that his dream is to live at home with a foster parent. PATH (Planning Alternative Tomorrows with Hope), a graphic facilitation process, was used for the planning session. PATH is a planning process in which a person is supported by other people to find their dream and set positive and possible targets to move towards that dream. Unfortunately, after their planning sessions, the Social and Legal Protection Authority reaches the absurd conclusion that institutional care was in Marek’s best interest.

While Marek’s case is not a standard one, it is also not exceptional in the Czech Republic. Paradoxically, the most vulnerable children are placed in institutions, with social workers showing no interest in placing children with disabilities in foster care.

In the second video, thanks to the PATH planning sessions, Marek expresses his wish to spend more time among other children and to do different activities such as sports or play guitar.

Marek, surrounded by supportive people, started to consider the idea of becoming a member of a local Scout troops. At the first meeting of the local troops, Hawk, the Scout leader, accepted Marek as a new member. Then, Marek received a new nickname, “Lifeguard,” after the first scouting expedition.
